CLINTON T. HOBART - Biography
Artist Clinton T. Hobart was born in Philadelphia but grew up in New Jersey. Clinton studied fine art and figure drawing at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and holds a BFA in illustration from the same school. Clinton had the privilege of being awarded a number of internships at major film studios and completed the taxing Disney Animation Mentorship Program with Walt Disney Studios. The associations with the corporate world instilled in Clinton a respect for the schedules and deadlines inherent in that demanding business environment but made him realize how much he missed the truly informed and creative process.
During his years in New York, Clinton attended classes at the prestigious Art Students League and often would spend his free time attending life-drawing sessions at Spring Studio. (Considered by many artists to be the best place to draw in New York City, Spring Studio is a professional art studio offering ongoing life drawing sessions 7 days a week.) Among the many notable artists whose classes he attended are James McMullan and Everett Raymond Kinstler. Painting is a skill which requires knowledge, practice and, most importantly, a solid approach. Clinton believed then, and believes still, “that excellent drawing skills are prerequisite to the creation of great painting”.
After receiving his B.F.A., Clinton moved to Scottsdale, Arizona where he began teaching classes at the acclaimed Scottsdale Artists’ School. It was there that he met renowned portrait artist Daniel Greene and would spend the next five summers working with him in his studio in North Salem, NY. Clinton was one of two artists personally invited by Mr. Greene to be an assistant. Sensing the potential and strong future in his apprentice, Daniel Greene purchased an early Hobart painting.
“Painting is a language in which an intellectually stimulating idea must be spoken with precision. Such precision comes by painting objects from life.” All of Clinton’s artwork is done completely from life.
Hobart participated in the “High Focus Drawing” premier exhibit at the School of Visual Arts Museum and in the “Five Years of Figure Drawing” Anniversary Show at Spring Studio, New York. Some recent shows include a solo exhibition in November 2006 in Scottsdale, Arizona as well as a group still-life show in May 2007 at the same gallery. Clinton is involved with several upcoming events in 2008 including a realism show in May at the Tempe Center for the Arts in Tempe, Arizona. This exhibition also includes some of the best painters in the genre of Realism working in that field today. He also has a solo exhibition planned in July 2009.
Clinton’s work is in many private collections, both nationally and internationally. Clinton T. Hobart’s collectors include CEO's, actors and actresses, several well known artists, and prominent businessmen and women.
Although he has moved back to the east coast, Clinton continues to teach regular workshops at the Scottsdale Artists’ School focusing on the passion in his life: the solid approach to oil painting accomplished through a good grounding in drawing.
